Switch Zalo to English on your phone (30 seconds)
On iPhone and Android the path is the same:
- Open Zalo and tap the Me tab (Cá nhân) in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the gear icon ⚙ — Settings (Cài đặt).
- Tap Language (Ngôn ngữ).
- Choose English. The app switches instantly — no restart, no reinstall, nothing lost.
Two useful extras: on the login screen there's a language/globe switch in the corner, so you can get to English before you even sign in. And if a friend's phone is set to Vietnamese and you need to find the setting, look for Cài đặt → Ngôn ngữ — same path, Vietnamese labels. (Menu wording current as of June 2026; Zalo shuffles labels occasionally, but the Settings → Language path has been stable for years.)
Zalo PC & Zalo Web in English
Zalo PC (the official Windows/Mac app): click your avatar or the gear icon in the lower-left → Settings (Cài đặt) → Language (Ngôn ngữ) → English. The desktop app may ask to refresh its window to apply.
Zalo Web (chat.zalo.me in a browser): same gear icon, bottom-left → Cài đặt → Ngôn ngữ → English. Zalo Web is also where browser translation extensions can operate — more on those in the workarounds table.
What the English setting actually changes — and what it doesn't
Flipping the language to English converts the chrome of the app:
- Menus, buttons, settings screens and system labels
- Onboarding flows and most error messages
- Notification templates ("sent you a message" instead of "đã gửi tin nhắn")
It does not change:
- Message content — every chat from your landlord, building group or gas shop is still Vietnamese
- Voice and video calls — spoken Vietnamese, no captions, no translation
- Official account (OA) notifications — banks, utilities and government OAs broadcast in Vietnamese
- Support & help content — largely Vietnamese-first
The part no setting fixes: your messages are still in Vietnamese
This is the structural gap that surprises every newcomer: WeChat has a built-in "Translate" on long-press; Zalo has nothing equivalent on any platform. Zalo is built for a country where 99% of users are Vietnamese, so translation simply isn't on its roadmap — the top Google results for "zalo in english" are years of unanswered support-forum threads asking for exactly this.
And the messages are where life actually happens. Vietnam runs on Zalo the way Germany runs on email: your building manager posts the water-outage notice in the Zalo group, the gas shop confirms delivery on Zalo, the visa agent sends the document checklist on Zalo. An English interface around Vietnamese content is a glass window onto a conversation you still can't read.
A typical day's reality — this is what your chat list looks like with the interface in perfect English:
You want to say: “(what you wish it said) The repairman will come tomorrow at 9am — please leave the AC on so he can check the leak.”
Chị chủ nhà: "Mai 9h sáng thợ qua kiểm tra nha em. Em để máy lạnh bật sẵn giúp chị để thợ xem chỗ chảy nước."
The English setting translated the Send button — not this.
Every workaround, compared honestly
These are the options expats actually use, with the real trade-offs:
| Workaround | Good for | Where it breaks | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy-paste into Google Translate | Occasional messages | Every. Single. Message. Both directions, all day — and your reply comes out stiff or accidentally rude | Free |
| Chrome extensions on Zalo Web | Reading chats at a desk | Browser-only, break when Zalo updates, nothing on your phone, can't write Vietnamese for you, no calls | Free–$10/mo |
| Screenshot → photo translate | Stickers, images, menus | Slowest loop of all; useless mid-conversation | Free |
| Your bilingual friend | High-stakes stuff | Finite goodwill — four landlord disputes in, you can feel the tab running | Dinners |
| Learning Vietnamese | Life, long-term | ~1,100 classroom hours (US FSI Category IV. The AC leaks tonight.) | Years |

Or: make Zalo itself bilingual
ZaloDesk is a desktop app for your existing Zalo account (sign in by QR, like Zalo PC). Every incoming Vietnamese message appears in English; you type English and it sends natural, polite Vietnamese — with a preview you approve first. The workaround table above stops being your life.

And the phone calls?
The honest answer to "how do I use Zalo in English" eventually hits the wall every workaround shares: somebody says "gọi chị nhé" — just call me. Landlords, repairmen and shippers in Vietnam treat the call as the serious channel, and no language setting, extension or copy-paste loop helps you on a live Vietnamese phone call.
That's the half we're proudest of: ZaloDesk's voice AI places the Zalo call for you and speaks fluent, polite Vietnamese — you type the task in English ("ask the landlord to send the AC repairman tomorrow morning"), watch live English subtitles as the call happens, and get English notes when it hangs up. If your hardest conversations are with your landlord, the playbook (scripts included) is in how to deal with your Vietnamese landlord.

Zalo in English — FAQ
Is Zalo available in English?
Partly. Zalo's interface (menus, buttons, settings) can be switched to English on iPhone, Android, PC and web. But Zalo has no built-in translation for message content — chats, group messages and voice calls stay in whatever language they were written or spoken in, which in Vietnam means Vietnamese.
How do I change Zalo to English on my phone?
Open Zalo, tap the Me tab (Cá nhân), tap the gear icon for Settings (Cài đặt), choose Language (Ngôn ngữ), then select English. The app switches immediately — no reinstall needed. On the login screen you can also tap the globe/language icon before signing in.
Does Zalo have built-in chat translation like WeChat?
No. WeChat long-pressing a message offers "Translate"; Zalo has no equivalent on any platform as of mid-2026. To read Vietnamese messages in English you need an external tool: copy-paste translation, a browser extension on Zalo web, or ZaloDesk, which translates every chat both ways inside the app.
Can I register Zalo with a foreign phone number?
Sometimes — Zalo officially supports sign-up from many countries, but OTP delivery to foreign numbers is hit-and-miss and some features stay limited. The reliable path is a Vietnamese SIM (cheap and useful anyway). If you already activated Zalo with a VN number, it keeps working when you travel.
Can anything translate Zalo voice calls?
Live captioning tools like Akkadu can subtitle a call, but you still have to speak Vietnamese yourself. The only tool that speaks for you is ZaloDesk Expat Edition: you type the task in English, its AI places a real Zalo call and conducts it in polite Vietnamese while you watch live English subtitles.
Is using ZaloDesk safe? Do I need a new account?
You sign in to your existing Zalo account by scanning a QR code — the same way Zalo PC works — and your chats stay stored locally on your computer, not on ZaloDesk servers. No new account, no password handover; Zalo on your phone keeps working as before.
